World Mental Health Day

NORMAL

World Mental Health Day provides an opportunity for stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work and what more needs to be done to support those suffering from this serious health issue. The NAC will “Light Up Purple” today, to raise awareness about the issue of mental illness and the impact it has on the lives of so many in our communities.

My Name is Amanda Todd is a JUNO Award-winning orchestral work composed by Jocelyn Morlock. Amanda Todd was a vibrant 15-year-old from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia who loved singing and expressing herself through music. Amanda Todd tragically took her life on October 10, 2012 after suffering for years from cyber abuse, harassment and bullying at school. Amanda posted a poignant video on YouTube, using a series of flash cards, speaking out against bullying and sharing her story. The message of hope, empathy and tolerance she expressed in her video has since caused a worldwide groundswell of support, and is now being used by educators and parents to support anti-bullying measures.

Carol Todd, Amanda’s mother, continues to spread Amanda’s message through The Amanda Todd Legacy, the non-profit society Carol founded that focuses on awareness and the well-being of individuals with respect to preventions and awareness relating to bullying, cyber abuse and internet safety, as well as resources and education that encourage mental wellness and healthy living.

Carol Todd continues to share her daughter’s story and raise awareness about bullying, reminding us that together we can break the stigma surrounding mental illness.
