Barbara Assiginaak, C.M., O.Ont.
Composer and musician Barbara Assiginaak is Anishinaabekwe (Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi; Mnidoo Mnissing, Giniw Dodem) and balances her time composing with performing and teaching music; spending time with elders in traditional ceremonies; and engaging in land-based environmental activities and teaching work rooted in traditional Anishinaabek teachings. Composing for the pipigwan (traditional wood flute), dewe’igan (drum), and voice in the oral/aural traditions of the Anishinaabe way since an early age, Barbara is also classically trained. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto (Bachelor of Music with Honours in Composition), Musikhochschule in München, Germany (Meisterklassendiplom in Komposition, Aufbaustudium), and Centre Acanthes, and aslo holds an ARCT Diploma (Piano Performance). Professionally active since 1995, Barbara has an extensive body of works that includes solo, chamber, art song, choir and orchestral (including concerti) compositions, and she has written for theatre, dance, film, opera, and multimedia and interdisciplinary projects. Barbara often performs in her own solo, chamber and orchestral works as a soloist (vocals, pipigwan, drums, and other Anishinaabe instruments).
As the direct descendant of hereditary chiefs who were signatories of treaties in Ontario, and as the child and grandchild of residential school survivors, many of her creative projects are centered on these histories and she has been active over many years in Truth and Reconciliation Commission activities. Already back in 1992 one of her chamber ensemble works honoured her own mother’s recollections of experiences at residential school, stories of which were disclosed to Barbara at a young age growing up.
Barbara’s awards and honours include the Glenn Gould Award in Composition (University of Toronto); a Dora nomination; shortlisted three times for the Hunter Award in the Arts; numerous scholarships at the Glenn Gould School/Royal Conservatory of Music and from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (1992-96); and a Visual and Expressive Arts Program Award from the National Museum of the American Indian. Barbara’s works have been broadcast on CBC Radio One and Radio Two, Bayerische Rundfunk (Bayern 3), Deutsche Radio Swiss (DRS-II), Radio France, Italian National Television, APTN, and other online streaming broadcasts. Barbara is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Composition at the Faculty of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University.

Barbara Assiginaak est une compositrice et musicienne anishinaabekwe (d’origine odawa, ojibwée et potawatomi; Mnidoo Mnissing, Giniw Dodem) qui partage son temps entre la composition, la scène et l’enseignement. Habituée des cérémonies traditionnelles aux côtés des personnes aînées, elle participe également aux activités écologiques liées à l’exploitation de la terre. Ses méthodes d’enseignement sont enracinées dans les enseignements traditionnels anishinaabeg. Depuis son plus jeune âge, elle compose de la musique pour le pipigwan (flûte traditionnelle en bois), le dewe’igan (tambour) et la voix dans le respect des traditions orales et sonores des Anishinaabeg. De formation classique, Barbara Assiginaak détient un baccalauréat en musique (composition) de l’Université de Toronto, un diplôme en composition de la Musikhochschule de Munich (Allemagne), un diplôme du Centre Acanthes, ainsi qu’un diplôme ARCT en interprétation au piano. Depuis ses débuts en 1995, Barbara Assiginaak est l’auteure de nombreuses œuvres pour chœur, voix, ensemble de musique de chambre, chanson d’art et orchestre (y compris des concertos) pour le théâtre, la danse, le cinéma, l’opéra, le multimédia et des projets interdisciplinaires. Elle interprète régulièrement ses œuvres en solo (voix, pipigwan, percussions et autres instruments anishinaabe).
En tant que descendante directe des chefs héréditaires qui ont signé des traités en Ontario et fille et petite-fille de survivants des pensionnats autochtones, Barbara Assiginaak s’est nourrie de ces histoires pour alimenter son travail. Elle a participé activement aux activités de la Commission de vérité et réconciliation. Déjà, dès 1992, elle s’est imprégnée des souvenirs de pensionnat que sa mère lui contait dans son enfance pour composer une œuvre pour ensemble de musique de chambre.
Elle a reçu de nombreux prix, dont le prix Glenn Gould en composition (Université de Toronto), une nomination aux prix Dora, trois nominations pour le prix K.M. Hunter, plusieurs bourses du Conservatoire royal de musique, de l’École Glenn Gould et de la National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (1992-1996) et un prix du Visual and Expressive Arts Program (National Museum of the American Indian). On a pu entendre ses œuvres à CBC Radio One, CBC Radio Two, Bayerische Rundfunk-Bayern 3, à la radio suisse allemande DRS-II, à Radio France, à APTN, à la télévision nationale italienne et sur d’autres plateformes de diffusion en continu en ligne. Elle est actuellement professeure adjointe et coordonnatrice en composition à la Faculté de musique de l’Université Wilfrid-Laurier.
