Nick sits down with Joel Quarrington (double bass), Chris Millard (bassoon), and Jonathan Wade (timpani) to discuss the bass sections of the orchestra. They discuss the importance of the "low notes" in balancing out the melody and giving body to the works.
For over thirty years, Joel Quarrington has served as the Principal Double Bassist of many ensembles including the Canadian Opera Company, The Toronto Symphony and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and most recently, the famous London Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Toronto, Joel Quarrington began his formal studies of the double bass when he was thirteen. Upon graduation from the University of Toronto, he was awarded the “Eaton Scholarship” as the school’s most outstanding graduate. Joel is a winner of the Geneva International Competition and the CBC Talent Competition, and has made solo appearances across Canada, the United States, Europe and China.
Joel teaches in the summers at the Orford Arts Centre in Quebec’s beautiful Eastern Townships where his masterclasses have attracted players from around the world. He also teaches at the University of Ottawa and at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he is a “Visiting Artist”.
He has performed with many of the world’s leading string quartets including the Orford, Vermeer, Cleveland, Colorado, St. Lawrence, Allegri, Artis, Leipzig and Tokyo Quartets as well as the Pinchas Zukerman Chamber Players. Their Sony recording of Schubert’s Trout Quintet with Yefim Bronfman became an instant classic. He is particularly honoured to have been a part of a 1982 recording session with the legendary Glenn Gould for the soundtrack of Timothy Findley’s The Wars. Written for solo cello and bass and based on Brahms’ Intermezzi, this turned out to be the last music composed by Gould before his untimely death.
In April of 2005 he had the honour of playing the world premier John Harbison’s Concerto for Bass with the Toronto Symphony and conductor Hugh Wolf.
Joel has made several solo recordings that have made him famous at least in the bass world. His early Bottesini recordings on the NAXOS label are considered by many to be definitive. In April 2010, his recording, “Garden Scene”, won the 2010 Juno Award for Best Classical Recording. It was released by the Analekta label and features music of Korngold, Gliere, M.Weinberg, J.C. Bach and Bottesini. June 2013 marked the release of his most recent recording “Brothers in Brahms”, which features music of Robert Fuchs, Robert Schumann and the 1st Violin Sonata in G op.78 by Johannes Brahms. He was very happy to collaborate with the remarkable young Canadian pianist, David Jalbert for this project and in February 2015 this recording won the prestigious “Prix Opus” as the Outstanding Romantic Classical Recording of the year in Quebec.
In 2011, he received a Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Solo Performance from the International Society of Bassists and in 2015 they awarded Joel the same award for Outstanding Orchestral Performance.
He performs on an Italian bass made in 1630 by the Italian master, Santo Paolo Maggini and is an enthusiastic advocate of the historical practice of tuning the bass in fifths (CGDA, an octave lower than the cello) rather than the customary fourths. He believes fifths tuning leads to clearer and more accurate performance in all ranges of the bass, as well as greater tonal richness.
Joel is married to cellist Carole Sirois, and they live happily beside the Gatineau Park near Chelsea, Quebec.

Comme chambriste, il s’est produit avec bon nombre des quatuors à cordes les plus réputés de la planète, dont les ensembles Orford, Vermeer, Cleveland, Colorado, St. Lawrence, Allegri, Artis, Leipzig et Tokyo, ainsi qu’avec les Pinchas Zukerman ChamberPlayers. Il a d’ailleurs collaboré avec cet ensemble et avec le pianiste Yefim Bronfman à l’enregistrement du quintette La Truite de Schubert, qui a connu un succès instantané à sa parution chez Sony. Joel est particulièrement fier d’avoir pris part, en 1982, à une séance d’enregistrement avec le grand Glenn Gould pour la trame sonore de The Wars de Timothy Findley. Cette musique pour violoncelle et contrebasse solos d’après les Intermezzi de Brahms est la dernière œuvre composée par Gould avant sa mort prématurée.
C’est à lui qu’est revenu l’honneur, en avril 2005, de présenter en création mondiale le Concerto pour contrebasse de John Harbison avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Toronto sous la direction de Hugh Wolf. Joel a à son actif plusieurs enregistrements comme soliste qui ont fait sa renommée à tout le moins dans le monde de la contrebasse. Ses premiers enregistrements de Bottesini, sous étiquette NAXOS, sont considérés par beaucoup comme inégalés. Son disque Garden Scene, paru chez Analekta et réunissant des œuvres de Korngold, Gliere, M. Weinberg, J.C. Bach et Bottesini, a remporté en avril 2010 le JUNO du Meilleur album classique. En 2011, il a récolté un Prix spécial pour prestation solo exceptionnelle à l’International Society Bassists (ISB), société qui l’a accueilli comme interprète vedette à trois reprises lors de congrès biennaux.
Joel joue sur une contrebasse italienne fabriquée en 1630 par le maître Santo Paolo Maggini. Il est un ardent défenseur de la pratique historique qui consiste à accorder la contrebasse à la quinte, une octave plus bas que le violoncelle, plutôt qu’à la quarte, et il joue exclusivement sur un instrument accordé de cette manière. Pour lui, l’accord à la quinte permet un jeu plus clair et précis dans tous les registres, et ajoute à la richesse tonale de l’instrument.
Joel Quarrington est marié à la violoncelliste Carole Sirois. Le couple mène une vie heureuse en bordure du parc de la Gatineau près de Chelsea (Québec).
Christopher Millard, one of Canada’s best known woodwind artists, joined the National Arts Centre Orchestra as principal bassoon in 2004 after serving with the Vancouver Symphony and the CBC Radio Orchestra for 28 years. He is also the principal bassoon for the Grand Teton Music Festival and has made five concert tours with Valery Gergiev and the World Orchestra for Peace.
A distinguished teacher, Mr. Millard served on the faculty of Northwestern University until 2014, and continues to give masterclasses at many of the foremost music schools: Curtis Institute, New World Symphony, Manhattan School, Rice University, Indiana University, the National Orchestral Institute as well as in Canada at Domaine Forget. For 20 years, Mr. Millard was the bassoon professor for the National Youth Orchestra where he helped nurture a new generation of Canadian wind players. His students now occupy numerous positions in American and Canadian orchestras. A student of Roland Small and the legendary Sol Schoenbach at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, Mr. Millard also studied with the great French flutist Marcel Moyse.
A regular guest artist and teacher at the Scotia, Banff, Orford and Ottawa Chamber Music Festivals, Mr. Millard has also appeared in concert and recordings with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Marlboro Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the International Double Reed Society and as a soloist with numerous orchestras. He regularly performs at home and on tour with the National Arts Centre Wind Quintet, a highly acclaimed ensemble that has made a debut recording on the Naxos label.
Mr. Millard has received wide praise for his numerous recordings BIS, Naxos, Arabesque, CBC Records and Summit, including a disc in the prestigious “OrchestraPro” series. His recording of the Hétu Bassoon Concerto won a 2004 Juno Award. He is a recognized authority on the acoustics of reedmaking and a skilled woodwind technician.
Christopher Millard, qui compte parmi les instrumentistes à vent les plus connus au Canada, s’est joint à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts en 2004 à titre de basson solo, après avoir passé 28 ans au sein de l’Orchestre symphonique de Vancouver et de l’Orchestre de CBC Radio. Il est aussi basson solo du Grand Teton Music Festival et a fait cinq tournées avec le chef Valery Gergiev et l’Orchestre mondial pour la paix.

A native of Ottawa, Jonathan Wade received a Bachelor of Music in percussion from the University of Ottawa where he studied with Ian Bernard and Pierre Béluse. He went on to obtain a Superior Studies diploma in orchestral repertoire for timpani from the University of Montréal under Louis Charbonneau.
Since 1982, Jonathan Wade has performed as a percussionist and timpanist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. In 1983 he was appointed principal timpanist of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Wade is heard frequently with other fine ensembles including Capital Brass Works, Thirteen Strings and the Ottawa Choral Society. He performs regularly in Music and Beyond and in the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival.
In 2002, Jonathan Wade became professor of timpani at the University of Ottawa and was appointed head of percussion in 2006. He was the percussion instructor at the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy from 1986 to 2009. Jonathan is very active in the NAC’s Music in the Schools program with the Bangers and Smash percussion duo and as a drummer in the Ragtime Brass sextet.

Il a par ailleurs enseigné la percussion à l’Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy de 1986 à 2009. Il participe très activement au programme Les musiciens dans les écoles du CNA avec le Bangers and Smash (duo de percussion) et le Sextuor de cuivres Ragtime.
