For today's NACO Lunch Break we join Hilda Cowie (NACO Double Bass) and her partner, Alex Moxon, as they perform Bottesini's Elegy no. 1 for Double Bass and Piano, arranged by Alex for double bass and guitar.
Bassist Hilda Cowie has always been surrounded by music. The daughter of a bassist and a trombonist, her path to a career in music was a natural one. She began studying the bass with her mother, a member of Symphony Nova Scotia, upon entering high school and continued as a student of Joel Quarrington at the University of Toronto and the RCM Glenn Gould School.
Hilda is an active member of the Canadian music scene and has performed coast to coast in various capacities. She has held positions as principal bass of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Kingston Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with major Canadian orchestras including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company, Symphony Nova Scotia, and l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal.
Hilda can be heard on recordings by the NAC Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Banff Centre’s Gruppo Montebello and has performed in solo recital in Ottawa, Halifax, and Toronto. She enjoys frequently performing chamber music with friends and colleagues.
Hilda has been a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 2001.
La contrebassiste Hilda Cowie a été bercée par la musique dès son enfance. Née d’une mère contrebassiste et d’un père tromboniste, elle a embrassé tout naturellement une carrière musicale. C’est auprès de sa mère, contrebassiste à l’Orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle-Écosse, qu’elle s’est initiée à l’instrument au début de l’école secondaire, avant de devenir l’élève de Joel Quarrington à l’Université de Toronto et à la Glenn Gould School du Conservatoire royal de musique de Toronto.
Active sur la scène musicale canadienne, Hilda s’est produite dans différents types de concerts d’un océan à l’autre du Canada. En plus de récitals présentés à Ottawa, Halifax et Toronto, elle a été contrebasse solo des orchestres symphoniques de Winnipeg et de Kingston, ainsi que de l’Orchestre de chambre du Manitoba. Elle a aussi joué avec la plupart des grands orchestres canadiens, dont l’Orchestre symphonique de Toronto, la Canadian Opera Company, l’Orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle-Écosse et l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.
Hilda a en outre collaboré à des enregistrements de l’Orchestre du CNA, de l’Orchestre de chambre du Manitoba et du Gruppo Montebello du Centre des arts de Banff. Elle aime faire de la musique de chambre avec amis et collègues. Hilda est membre de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis 2001.
