  Featuring Suba Sankaran

  Suba Sankaran is a DORA award-winning, thrice-JUNO-nominated musician whose career began at an early age while studying South Indian classical singing and percussion with her father, master drummer Trichy Sankaran. She graduated from York University in 1997, where she studied jazz, early music, world music and contemporary improvisation, and completed her Master of Arts degree in Ethnomusicology in 2002.

  Suba is co-artistic director of the award-winning Indo-fusion ensemble Autorickshaw, she crosses genres with the a cappella live-looping FreePlay duo, and sings the top 40s of the 80s with Retrocity.

  She effortlessly combines musical worlds, spanning several centuries and genres, and has performed across Canada, the U.S., Europe, the U.K., Asia and Africa. Highlights include performing for Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu and Peter Gabriel, and performing with Bobby McFerrin as well as The Swingles.

  Suba is in demand as a private teacher, educator, choral director, arranger, adjudicator and composer and has given numerous workshops to choirs around the world.

  She has composed, recorded and produced music for theatre, film, radio, and for south Indian and modern dance. Highlights include collaborations with Oscar-nominee Deepa Mehta. Suba has created compositions, arrangements and sound design for various plays at Stratford and Shaw Festivals. 

  Suba has performed on numerous recordings and film soundtracks and has been recorded in many contexts by CBC Radio.

  She has received several awards for her musical accomplishments. 

  La musicienne Suba Sankaran, lauréate d’un prix DORA et finaliste à trois reprises aux JUNO, a commencé à étudier le chant et les percussions classiques du sud de l’Inde dès son plus jeune âge avec son père, le maître percussionniste Trichy Sankaran. Elle a étudié le jazz, la musique ancienne, la musique du monde et l’improvisation contemporaine à l’Université York (diplômée en 1997), et obtenu une maîtrise en ethnomusicologie en 2002.

  Suba est codirectrice artistique d’Autorickshaw, un ensemble de musique indofusion, lauréat d’un prix. Elle transcende les genres dans le duo de boucles musicales en direct a capella FreePlay, et interprète les 40 plus grands succès des années 80 avec Retrocity. 

  Suba marie remarquablement une diversité d’univers musicaux, s’étendant sur plusieurs siècles et genres, et s’est produite en Amérique du Nord, en Europe, au Royaume-Uni, en Asie, en Australie et en Afrique. Parmi les moments forts de sa carrière, mentionnons ses spectacles pour Nelson Mandela, l’archevêque Desmond Tutu et Peter Gabriel, et aux côtés de Bobby McFerrin et The Swingles. Les talents de Suba à titre de professeure privée, pédagogue, chef de chœurs, arrangeuse, membre de jurys et compositrice sont aussi très recherchés. Elle a offert de nombreux ateliers à des chœurs de partout dans le monde.

  Elle a composé, enregistré et produit de la musique pour le théâtre, le cinéma, la radio et pour la danse sud-indienne et moderne. Elle a notamment collaboré avec la réalisatrice Deepa Mehta, mise en nomination aux Oscar.   Suba s’est produite sur de nombreux enregistrements et trames sonores de films, et a été enregistrée dans de multiples contextes sur les ondes de la radio de CBC.

  Elle a reçu plusieurs prix pour ses réalisations musicales.
