Zachary Bond is a distinguished bass trombonist who has achieved great success in both teaching and performing across Canada, the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Recently appointed as the bass trombone of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, he is also the Artistic Director of the Singapore International Low Brass Academy and a co-founder of the Festival of Trombones in Coppell, Texas.
Previously, Zachary served as the Lecturer of Brass at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and Adjunct Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at Hong Kong University. He has also held full-time positions as Principal Bass Trombone of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Jacksonville Symphony. Additionally, Zachary has taught at the National University of Singapore's Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
Born and raised in Texas, Zachary was accepted to Philadelphia's prestigious Curtis Institute of Music at age 16. After earning his Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute in 2003, Zachary received a full scholarship to attend Yale University the following year. Zachary studied under the tutelage of renowned trombonists such as Jon Bohls, Keith Meek, Blair Bollinger, Scott Hartman, Mark Lawrence, John Rojak, and Steve Norrell.
Throughout his illustrious career, Zachary has performed with some of the world's leading ensembles, including the National Arts Cente Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Brass, the San Diego Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Ballet, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Macau Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. He has also participated in a variety of summer music festivals, such as the National Repertory Orchestra, Music Academy of the West, the Aspen Music Festival, the Verbier Festival, Spoleto USA, and Pierre Boulez's Lucerne Festival.
As a soloist, Zachary has won first prize in the 2003 Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition in Helsinki, Finland, and the 2006 Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition in Birmingham, England. He is also a regular adjudicator for the International Trombone Association Competition's preliminary and final rounds and has served on the jury of the Jeju International Bass Trombone Competition in Jeju, Korea.
Zachary is a passionate educator and has been a regular guest lecturer and performer globally. He has been in residence at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and numerous venues in the United States, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Mexico. Zachary was invited as a guest artist at the 2010 International Trombone Festival in Austin, Texas, and was invited once again to the 2013 International Trombone Festival in Columbus, Georgia.
In 2016, Zachary premiered Sheridan Seyfried's Concerto for bass trombone and orchestra with the U.S. Army Orchestra in Washington, D.C., conducted by Colonel Timothy Holtan.
Zachary has also recorded on four newly released albums, including Canadian Brass's Echo: The Glory of Gabrieli, the Houston Symphony's DVD collaboration with NASA celebrating the advent of high-definition Hubble Space Telescope images set to the music of Gustav Holst's The Planets suite, culminating in a live performance on tour to New York's Carnegie Hall, and Dvořák's 7th and 8th Symphonies with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and Claus Peter Flor. Zachary has also performed in China with Canadian Brass on Hunan TV's Chinese New Year show for over half a billion viewers.
Zachary pays exclusively on THEIN trombones. He has developed the Universal Bass Trombone and Contrabass Trombones, and the American Bass Trombone Model Bb – F – G with Max Thein and Olav Brandt.
