  Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

  Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s debut as a choreographer was in 1999 with Andrew Wale’s contemporary musical, Anonymous Society. Since then, he has made over 50 full-fledged choreographic pieces and picked up a slew of awards, including two Olivier Awards, three Ballet Tanz awards for Best Choreographer (2008, 2011, 2017) and the Kairos Prize (2009) for his artistic vision and his quest for intercultural dialogue.

  In 2008 Cherkaoui premiered Sutra at Sadler’s Wells. This award-winning collaboration with artist Antony Gormley and the Shaolin monks continues to tour the world to great critical acclaim. After his first commissioned piece in North America, Orbo Novo (Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet) and a series of duets such as Faun (which premiered at Sadler’s Wells as part of In the Spirit of Diaghilev) and Dunas with flamenco dancer María Pagés (both 2009), he launched his own company Eastman, resident at DE SINGEL International Arts Centre (Antwerp).  

  In 2015, Cherkaoui directed his first full-length theatre production Pluto based on the award-winning manga series by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki at Bunkamura in Tokyo, bringing the beloved manga character Astro Boy to life on stage, and was movement director for Lyndsey Turner's Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican Centre in London. He also made a trio Harbor Me commissioned by the L.A. Dance Project and choreographed a new Firebird for Stuttgart Ballet. In the same year, Cherkaoui created a new production Fractus V for his company Eastman, in which he also performs.

  Since 2015, Cherkaoui has been artistic director at the Royal Ballet Flanders, where he has created Fall (2015), Exhibition (2016) and Requiem (2017). He combines this function with his title as artistic director of Eastman and keeps creating new work along with the artistic entourage of this company.

  In 2019, Cherkaoui made his Broadway debut as choreographer for the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill, directed by Diane Paulus and with a book by Diablo Cody. For this production, he was nominated for a Tony Award in the category Best Choreography. He is the first Belgian choreographer to be nominated in this category.

  Starting from the season 2022-2023, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will direct the Ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Genève. He is also an associate artist at Sadler’s Wells (London) and Théâtre National de Bretagne (Rennes). 

  Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui a débuté sa carrière de chorégraphe en 1999 dans Anonymous Society, une comédie musicale contemporaine d’Andrew Wale. Depuis lors, il a signé plus de 50 chorégraphies, qui lui ont valu une série de prix parmi lesquels deux Prix Olivier, trois titres de Meilleur chorégraphe de l’année par le magazine Tanz (2008, 2011, 2017) et le Kairos Prize pour sa vision artistique et sa recherche d’un dialogue culturel (2009). 

  2008 voit la première de Sutra au Sadler’s Wells. Cette production avec l’artiste Antony Gormley et les moines Shaolin, récompensée de nombreux prix, continue sa tournée dans le monde avec un grand succès. Après sa première pièce en Amérique du Nord, Orbo Novo (Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet) et une série de duos comme Faun (présentée au Sadler’s Wells dans le cadre de In the Spirit of Diaghilev) et Dunas avec la danseuse de flamenco María Pagés (2009) il crée sa propre compagnie Eastman, en résidence au DE SINGEL International Arts Centre (Anvers).

  En janvier 2015 a lieu la première de Pluto à Tokyo, où il met en scène une nouvelle adaptation au théâtre du manga d’Urasawa, produite par le Bunkamura. Il continue en Allemagne avec la chorégraphie de l’Oiseau de Feu de Stravinsky pour les Ballets de Stuttgart. En août, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui assure la chorégraphie du mouvement pour Hamlet, mis en scène par Lynsdey Turner à Londres avec la participation de Benedict Cumberbatch. Il créé également un trio Harbor Me commandé par le L.A. Dance Project. La même année, Cherkaoui crée une nouvelle production Fractus V pour sa compagnie Eastman, dans laquelle il se produit.

  En 2015, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui est nommé directeur artistique du Royal Ballet Flanders, où il a créé Fall (2015), Exhibition (2016) et Requiem (2017). Il associe cette fonction à la direction artistique de sa compagnie Eastman, et il continue à produire de nouvelles oeuvres avec l’entourage artistique de cette compagnie.

  En 2019, Cherkaoui fait ses débuts Broadway en tant que chorégraphe pour la production musicale Jagged Little Pill de Alanis Morissette, dirigée par Diane Paulus et avec un livre de Diablo Cody. Celle-ci lui mérite une nomination Tony Award dans la catégorie Meilleure chorégraphie. Il est le premier chorégraphe belge à entrer dans cette catégorie.  

  A partir de la saison 2022-2023, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui dirigera le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. Il est également artiste associé au Sadler’s Wells (Londres) et au Théâtre National de Bretagne (Rennes).

  Choreographer Damien Jalet

  

  Choreographer Damien Jalet

  Damien Jalet is an independent Belgian and French choreographer and dancer whose work has been presented all over the world. Interested in the capacity of dance constantly reinventing itself by conversing with other media such as visual art, music, cinema, theatre and fashion; his works are often collaborative. He worked as a choreographer and dancer for companies such as les ballets C de la B, Sasha Waltz & Guests, Chunky Move, Eastman, NYDC, Hessisches Staatsballetts, Paris Opera Ballet, Scottish Dance Theatre, Iceland Dance Company, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and few more.  

  In 2019, he became artist in residence at Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. He choreographed the entirely danced film Anima directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Thom Yorke who also scored the film. It premiered in June in IMAX theatres and on Netflix. For this work, also nominated Best Musical Film at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards, he won the Best Choreography Award at the UK Music Video Awards. The same year, he created four numbers with Madonna for her first theatrical tour Madame X, including the show opening and a live version of the 1998 song Frozen. 

  In 2020, he directed the runway show of Jun Takahashi’s Undercover at the Cirque d’Hiver in Paris with a collection inspired by Akira Kurosawa ‘s “throne of blood”, that joined later the list of the top runways of all time according to Tim Blanks of B.O.F.  

  In September 2020, as a reaction to the COVID-19 crisis, he accepted the last-minute offer from the Paris Opera Ballet to create a piece performed on the proscenium of Palais Garnier; he created Brise-lames with visual artist JR, pianist Koki Nakano and dancer Aimilios Arapoglou, Jalet’s artistic partner in all his key projects. 

  His next projects include the creation Mist for Dutch company NDT1 and Planet [wanderer] that is planned to premiere in Théâtre de Chaillot in September 2021. Both are collaborations with Kohei Nawa. 

  Damien Jalet was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2013. 

  Damien Jalet est un chorégraphe et danseur franco-belge dont les créations sont jouées dans le monde entier. Ses œuvres, souvent collaboratives, témoignent du pouvoir de la danse à se réinventer en permanence dans le dialogue avec les autres disciplines telles les arts plastiques, la musique, le cinéma et la mode.  En tant que chorégraphe et danseur, il a notamment travaillé pour des compagnies telles que les ballets C de la B, Sasha Waltz & Guests, Chunky Move, Eastman, NYDC, le Hessiches Staatsballetts, le ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, le Scottish Dance Theatre, la Compagnie Islandaise de danse et la GöteborgOperans Danskompani.  

  En 2019, il est artiste associé à Chaillot –Théâtre national de la Danse à Paris. Il chorégraphie le film intégralement dansé, Anima, réalisé par Paul Thomas Anderson, avec Thom Yorke qui signe également la bande-son. Le film est diffusé en avant-première en juin dans les salles de cinéma IMAX et sur Netflix. Pour cette œuvre, également nommée aux GRAMMY Awards 2019 dans la catégorie « meilleur film musical », il remporte le prix de la « meilleure chorégraphie » aux UK Music Video Awards. La même année, il crée quatre numéros avec Madonna pour sa tournée inédite Madame X, notamment l’ouverture du spectacle et une version live de la chanson de 1998 Frozen.  

  En 2020, il met en scène le défilé de mode de la marque Undercover du créateur Jun Takahashi au Cirque d’Hiver de Paris, avec une collection inspirée du Château de l’araignée d’Akira Kurosawa. Selon Tim Blanks, du B.O.F, il rejoint la liste des meilleurs défilés de tous les temps. En septembre 2020, en réaction à la crise sanitaire du COVID 19, il accepte au dernier moment la proposition de l’Opéra de Paris de créer une pièce jouée sur le plateau du Palais Garnier. Il signe Brise-lames avec l’artiste visuel JR, le pianiste Koki Nakano et le danseur Aimilios Arapoglou, fidèle associé présent dans toutes ses pièces emblématiques.  

  Ses projets en cours sont la création de Mist pour la compagnie néerlandaise NDT1 et Planet [wanderer] dont la première est prévue à Chaillot –Théâtre national de la Danse en septembre 2021. Ces deux créations sont des collaborations avec Kohei Nawa.  

  Jalet a également enseigné sa technique personnelle basée sur la force centrifuge dans de nombreux pays et institutions : Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, ImPulsTanz Vienna, Atelier de Paris, et Architanz Tokyo.  

  Damien Jalet est nommé Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres du gouvernement français en 2013.

  Stage designer Antony Gormley

  Having briefly studied contemporary dance at Cambridge as an extra-curricular activity, Antony Gormley has taken an active interest in the choreographic worlds of Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Pina Bausch, Bill Forsythe, Siobhan Davies and Michael Clarke. The inspiration of pure dance, with the body released as an expressive subject in its own right, detached from concerns with narrative, has been an inspiration for thirty years. He is less interested in the courtly disciplines of traditional ballet and more in the evolution begun by Martha Graham in which the body and its relationship to the floor and gravity opened up new expressive potentials for the language of the body in motion. 

  While spending a great deal of time trying to make material equivalents to what it feels like to inhabit a body, Antony Gormley has always had great interest in watching other bodies in dance. He considers the dancer’s life the most generous and demanding of any profession using life itself as the primary medium of communication. 

  Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human beings stand in relation to nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. 

  Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. His work in dance includes the critically acclaimed collaborations with Akram Khan, Hofesh Shechter, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Nitin Sawhney on zero degrees (2005, Sadler’s Wells) and again with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on Sutra (2008, Sadler’s Wells); Babel(words) (2010, Sadler’s Wells) for which he was given an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for the design of the set (2011); Noetic (2014, Göteborg Opera) and on Icon (2016, Göteborg Opera).

  Après avoir brièvement étudié la danse contemporaine à Cambridge en tant qu’activité parascolaire, Antony Gormley s’est intéressé activement aux mondes chorégraphiques de Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Pina Bausch, Bill Forsythe, Siobhan Davies et Michael Clarke. L’inspiration de la danse pure, avec le corps libéré comme un sujet expressif à part entière détaché des préoccupations narratives, est une inspiration depuis trente ans. Il s’intéresse moins aux disciplines du ballet classique qu’à l’évolution amorcée par Martha Graham dans laquelle le corps et sa relation au sol et à la gravité ont ouvert de nouveaux potentiels expressifs pour le langage du corps en mouvement.  

  En passant énormément de temps à essayer de rendre le matériel équivalent à ce que l’on ressent lorsqu’on habite un corps, Antony Gormley a toujours eu un grand intérêt à regarder d’autres corps dans la danse. Il considère la vie du danseur comme la plus généreuse et la plus exigeante de toute profession, utilisant la vie elle-même comme principal moyen de communication. 

  Antony Gormley est largement acclamé pour ses sculptures, installations et œuvres d’art public qui explorent la relation entre le corps humain et l’espace. Son travail a développé le potentiel de la sculpture depuis les années 1960 à travers un engagement critique avec son propre corps et ceux des autres d’une manière qui confronte les questions fondamentales de la position des êtres humains par rapport à la nature et au cosmos. Gormley tente continuellement d’identifier l’espace de l’art comme un lieu de ‘devenir’ dans lequel de nouveaux comportements, pensées et sentiments peuvent surgir.   

  Le travail de Gormley a été exposé à travers le Royaume-Uni et à l’international. Son travail en danse comprend les collaborations acclamées par la critique avec Akram Khan, Hofesh Shechter, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui et Nitin Sawhney sur zero degrees (2005, Sadler’s Wells) et à nouveau avec Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui sur Sutra (2008, Sadler’s Wells); Babel(words) (2010, Sadler’s Wells) pour lequel il a reçu un Prix Olivier dans la catégorie Excellence en danse pour la conception du décor (2011); Noetic (2014, Opéra de Göteborg) et Icon (2016, Opéra de Göteborg).
