Mozart’s "Hoffmeister" Quartet skilfully blends gaiety, ingenuity, and profundity with elegance and style, while its nickname honours Franz Anton Hoffmeister, the composer’s friend, sometime benefactor, and noted Viennese publisher. Haydn’s compact Opus 42 quartet, published in the same year of 1786, unfolds from an Andante marked "innocente," lingers over a lyrical Adagio, and ends with all forces dashing "presto" to a spirited conclusion.
