Canada's National Arts Centre

Some of the best emerging and established artists from across Canada appear with members of the NAC Orchestra in The National Arts Centre’s Made in Canada on March 15 at The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver

March 02, 2010

As part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, acclaimed conductor Julian Kuerti leads members of the NAC Orchestra and many other artists in a cross-Canada concert entitled The National Arts Centre’s Made in Canada. The concert takes place on Monday March 15 at 8 p.m in Chan Shun Concert Hall at The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver – as the spotlight shines on an evening to surprise and inspire Canadian and international audiences alike.

Canada’s National Arts Centre and Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad present a concert of unique and uniquely Canadian work, representing our rich cultural landscape through music, dance, and song. Led by conductor Julian Kuerti and members of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Made in Canada proudly showcases this country’s  astounding wealth of classical music talent with evocative works performed by supremely talented artists. The program includes:

  • Miniwanka, or The Moments of Water by R. Murray Schafer, performed by the Capilano University Singers (Lars Kaario, conductor) and the University of British Columbia Chorus
  • Elysium by Kati Agocs, a new work which evokes tales of shipwrecks off the perilous Newfoundland coast
  • Prélude Romantique No. 5 and ‘Concerto de Québec’ by André Mathieu, performed by Alain Lefèvre, piano. Alain Lefèvre is credited with rediscovering Quebec virtuoso composer André Mathieu's lost works
  • Bringing the Tiger Down from the Mountain II by Alexina Louie, performed by musicians Amanda Forsyth (NAC Orchestra principal cello) and Angela Cheng (piano) and dancers Matjash Mrozewski and Jesse Robb. This selection garnered huge acclaim when it was performed at the NAC’s 40th Anniversary Concert in June 2009.
  • Varley Suite by Stephen Chatman, performed by Jessica Linnebach, NAC Orchestra first violin
  • Take the Dog Sled by Alexina Louie performed by an NAC Orchestra ensemble and throat singers Evie Mark and Akinisie Sivuarapik
