Ottawa’s top chefs join forces for fundraising dinner in support of Haitian earthquake victims

Ottawa’s top culinary stars will prepare a dazzling gourmet dinner to raise funds for Haitian earthquake victims at 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, in the Panorama and Fountain rooms of the National Arts Centre.

Tickets for the four course dinner with wine cost $120 each and can be purchased at the NAC Box Office or through Ticketmaster at (613)755-1111. 

Proceeds from the dinner will be donated to CARE Canada’s Haitian earthquake relief effort. Tax receipts for a portion of the dinner will be mailed after the event.

Participating chefs who are donating their services include: Michael Blackie, National Arts Centre; Matt Carmichael, Eighteen Restaurant; Jim Foster, Pelican Grill; Geoffrey Morden, Fairmont Château Laurier; Steven Gugelemier, Ottawa Marriott; Clifford Lyness, Brookstreet Hotel; Russell Weir, Sheraton Ottawa Hotel; Cesare Saintaguida, Vittoria Trattoria; René Rodriguez, Navarra; Robin Bowen, Lago  Bar and Grill; Duane Keats, Luxe Bistro.

Participating suppliers who have donated their wares include: Vanhoutte Coffee; Premium Meats; Sysco Fine Foods; Jost Kaufmann Seafood; Le Coprin; Orleans Fresh Fruit Au Pain Doré Bakery; and Gastronomia.

John Szabo, one of Canada’s master sommeliers, has recruited various wineries from across Canada to donate to this event, including Huff Estates Winery, Rosemount Estate,
Hobbs & Co. Wine Merchants Inc. and Mark Anthony Brands.

The menu for the evening includes a first course of celery root velouté with le Coprin mushrooms, shaved allegretto and brown butter. The second course features a beet salad with candied walnuts, shaved pear, watercress and white miso vinaigrette. The main course features a striploin of black angus with Yukon gold potato cubic, choysum and edamame bean flash and veal marrow torn basil reduxe. And to top it all off, there will be a dessert of milk chocolate warmed lava cake with green peppercorn anglaise.

CARE, which has been working in Haiti for more than 50 years, is providing emergency relief to thousands of the most vulnerable survivors of the earthquake, including pregnant women and new mothers who urgently need clean water. To find out more visit www.care.ca.
