The international musicians of the NAC’s 2009 Summer Music Institute perform in multiple public events from June 14 to July 1
June 10, 2009
Ottawa, Canada -- The National Arts Centre’s Summer Music Institute (SMI), now entering its eleventh edition, will see 87 talented young musicians, conductors and composers from across Canada and around the world gather in Ottawa from June 9 to July 1 to study with an international faculty headed by Pinchas Zukerman, the Music Director of the NAC Orchestra. From June 14 until Canada Day there are a number of opportunities for the public to view these exceptional artists in performance.
The NAC Summer Music Institute was founded by Pinchas Zukerman in 1999, his first year as Music Director of the Orchestra. With this summer’s edition, the SMI will have provided training to 668 participants from 37 countries including Canada. The SMI consists of the Young Artists Program (YAP) for highly talented string, wind, piano and vocal musicians; the Conductors Program (CP), added in 2001, giving experienced conductors the chance to hone their skills in workshop format; and the Composers Program (CmP), added in 2003, during which composers develop an original work on a live ensemble. All three programs include concerts showcasing the talents of these stars of the future. (A chronological list of public events and Summer Music Institute participants follows.)
The 2009 Young Artists Program (YAP) offers 71 highly talented students from across Canada and around the globe the opportunity to take part in junior and senior levels of technical study. Exceptional students aspiring to be tomorrow’s best classical musicians are chosen by audition to participate in this intense program of study. Chamber music coaching is a key element of the students’ instruction and all the participants perform publicly in their chamber ensembles. There also three open masterclasses.
The public chamber concerts begin on June 14 with the Friends of the NAC Orchestra YAP Appreciation concert, in support of the Friends’ membership drive. Then on June 17 and 26 there are two separate noonhour chamber music concerts at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Three other different noonhour concerts will take place on June 23, 24 and 25 in the University of Ottawa’s School of Music Freiman Hall as part of the NCC’s Noon on the Bridge series. Four final recitals on June 26, 27, 29 and 30 in the University of Ottawa’s Tabaret Hall will showcase all the participants of the YAP in chamber ensembles. And to conclude the public events, members of the YAP will participate in the Canada Day concerts with the NAC Orchestra led by Pinchas Zukerman on July 1. Summer Music Institute public events also include three masterclasses – with cellist Hans Jorgen Jensen on June 23, with vocal coach Benita Valente on June 24, and on violin and viola with Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec on June 25. The NAC Summer Music Institute is presented in collaboration with the University of Ottawa.
The NAC Conductors Program (CP) concludes on June 20 with the five skilled participants leading the NAC Orchestra in a concert of musical classics. Throughout the Conductors Program, the participants have the benefit of the full-sized Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne to practice on under the expert guidance of Kenneth Kiesler, conductor and mentor-to-conductors, as well as Pinchas Zukerman.
The NAC Composers Program (CmP) concludes with a concert titled Celebration of Future Classics on June 22 in the NAC Theatre. The concert will feature the compositions that the five participants have workshopped throughout the program as well as works by their mentors Gary Kulesha and guest composer Poul Ruders. The works are performed by members of the Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne led by Jean-Philippe Tremblay and Gary Kulesha.
The Summer Music Institute is made possible through the wonderful generosity of individual donors, corporations and the NAC Foundation’s National Youth and Education Trust (Founding Partner TELUS), including major support from: Scotiabank, Galaxie-The Continuous Music Network, Nippon Foundation, Universal Music Canada and the University of Ottawa.
